Cleaning and caring for suede furniture

Nubuck and suede leather have a warm, velvety feel, but are considerably more sensitive than, for example, smooth leather. We show what to do with new, slightly greasy and heavily worn suede leather.

What is suede leather?

Nubuck and suede leather are leathers with a sanded surface and a more or less velvety finish. Their advantages are a pleasantly warm feel and an attractive structure. The disadvantage is that suede leather becomes shiny and greasy over time, absorbs stains more easily and fades faster than pigmented smooth leather.

New suede leather – care and protection

New suede leather benefits from regular care with Aniline Protector; it cares for the leather and protects it from drying out and fading.

If there is a risk of staining, the leather should also be treated with waterproofing for leather and textiles. In case of heavy use, no later than after one year, then more frequently depending on use.

Slightly greasy and shiny suede leather

Areas that have become slightly shiny can be cleaned and roughened again with the Colourlock Sanding Pad and the Colourlock Nubuck Eraser Block. This makes the leather more even and velvety again.

For stronger shine or more persistent areas: briefly pass a cloth lightly moistened with Leather Cleaning Spirit over the leather. Do not work too wet, do not rub hard, and always allow it to dry in between.

Wet cleaners are not very effective on suede leather. The leather gets wet, the cleaning effect is slight and there is a risk of rings. Exception: removable leather covers can be washed by hand or in the washing machine with Colourlock Leather & Fur Wash Concentrate. Afterwards, they must be waterproofed again with waterproofing for leather and textiles.

Surface soiling can sometimes be easily removed from suede leather. Apply a little Aniline & Nubuck Cleaner to a sponge and clean evenly from seam to seam without rubbing hard. The entire surface must be evenly damp. Then allow it to dry at room temperature (do not use a hair dryer). Waterproof after cleaning.

Grease and oil stains

Treat fresh grease or oil stains and very greasy areas with Grease Absorber Paste. Details can be found in our guide “Removing oil, grease, wax, resin and chewing gum.”

Colour refreshing

Faded areas can be refreshed in colour with Colourlock Nubuck Fresh. Suede leather is highly absorbent; a complete suite generally requires around 1 litre of tint.

NOTE:
Unfortunately, suede leather is sensitive and will never look like new again after cleaning and care. However, with the recommended products you have everything that can be used without difficulty to treat this leather yourself.
