Cleaning and caring for smooth leather furniture

Most leather sofas and armchairs are made of pigmented smooth leather. This article shows what new leather needs and how older leather can be cleaned, cared for or refreshed.

What is pigmented smooth leather?

Most furniture leather is plain-coloured, surface-dyed bovine leather with a matt to satin-matt finish. It has a protective colour layer on the surface, so a water droplet beads up. This leather is relatively easy to care for and hard-wearing.

There are also open-pore aniline leather, suede leather and glossy PU leather. This guide applies exclusively to pigmented, plain-coloured, matt smooth leather. You will find separate guides for all other types of furniture leather in our overview.

New leather (0 to 3 years)

Where there is visible soiling, clean the leather with Colourlock Leather Cleaner mild. Depending on use, treat it every 3 to 6 months with Leather Shield (sealant); it effectively prevents signs of wear, colour transfer and soiling. Both products are included in our New Leather Care Set.

IMPORTANT: Colour transfer from clothing is a delicate issue with light-coloured leather. Our Leather Shield prevents colourants from penetrating too deeply. Always clean the leather before sealing it, so that Leather Shield is applied to a clean surface.

Older leather (from 3 years)

We recommend cleaning the leather before every care treatment. Use our Colourlock Leather Cleaner mild for normal soiling; if dirt is deep in the grain, also use the Leather Cleaning Brush to help.

For ongoing care and preservation, we recommend our Colourlock Leather Care (care milk). Its antioxidants stop the leather from deteriorating, UV filters protect against fading, and the leather becomes supple again.

Colour abrasion and dry cracks can be refreshed with our Leather Fresh smooth-leather tints. Apply the tint several times to the most severely damaged areas and dry it with a hair dryer in between. Since Leather Fresh also has a slight filling effect, fine surface damage largely disappears. First roughen the affected areas briefly with the Sanding Pad and degrease them with Leather Cleaning Spirit; this significantly improves adhesion. Then treat the areas again with Leather Care so that both the colour and the leather are protected and cared for.

When purchasing our Leather Fresh smooth-leather tints, you must select the correct colour for your furniture leather. You may find this information on the invoice. If you no longer have it, look underneath the furniture to see whether the colour details can be found there. Compare the information with our manufacturer list. A mixing fee of CHF 25.– applies to special colours (all colours except F001–F046).

If the colour you are looking for is not listed, we will send you a colour chart with our standard colours free of charge. Here is the order form.

If the colour you are looking for can be found neither on the manufacturer list nor on the colour chart, we can also mix the colour from a sample or a RAL number. With most sofas and armchairs, the fabric stapled to the frame underneath the furniture can be loosened slightly and you can cut off a small piece of leather. The size of a CHF 1 coin is sufficient. You can also send us a headrest or a cushion cover, if available. Of course, you will receive the sample back and do not need to send it again for repeat orders, as we create our own reference sample. You will find our address below (please write the sender clearly):

IMPORTANT: When ordering through the shop, select the “send a sample” option in the colour selection for Leather Fresh and Fluid Leather (liquid leather). We will contact you immediately after receiving the sample.

Please note that special-colour mixes, whether based on a manufacturer colour, submitted sample or RAL number, take 7–9 working days from the order date to process before they are dispatched.

Major damage

Smooth rough or brittle areas with the Sanding Pad. Deeper dry cracks and smaller tears can be closed with our Colourlock Fluid Leather (liquid leather). Stabilise rough seating areas over a large surface with Binder Neutral.

For major damage, or if you do not want to carry out the repairs yourself, send us photos and we will be happy to provide you with a quote for treatment in our workshop.
