Cleaning and caring for artificial leather furniture

Artificial leather is robust and easy to care for, but it ages differently from genuine leather. Here we show what can be done and when there is no longer a solution.

Cleaning

Clean soiling on artificial leather with Artificial Leather Cleaner. Where dirt is embedded in the grain, allow it to soak briefly and use the Leather Cleaning Brush to help.

Care

After cleaning, artificial leather should always be protected with Artificial Leather Protector. It preserves the surface and noticeably slows down the ageing process. The artificial leather does not become shiny and the gloss level is not changed by applying Artificial Leather Protector.

Older plastics and artificial leather lose their plasticisers over time and become dry, brittle and sometimes crack. This process can only be influenced to a limited extent. Regular cleaning and sealing delay this process.

Small tears, splits and raised fibres

Fine tears and splits can be filled and sealed with our Fluid Leather (liquid leather). Then conceal them with Leather Fresh. Cat scratches and lifted edges on artificial leather can also be treated, provided the extent is still manageable. Details can be found in our guide

Raised fibres can be fixed with the tip of a needle and Colourlock Leather Glue: apply a very small amount of adhesive with the tip of the needle, allow it to dry slightly with a hair dryer, then press it flat. Wipe off fresh excess adhesive immediately with Leather Cleaning Spirit, working in the direction of the grain.

When artificial leather cracks or flakes over large areas

Unfortunately, this is a frequent occurrence with older artificial leather, particularly in the main contact areas. This damage can only be halted at a very early stage. Once it spreads, there is no longer a durable repair option.

In such cases, we can unfortunately only recommend covering the affected areas to keep wear to a minimum.
