Refreshing or colouring leather clothing

Would you like to refresh scratches on your leather jacket or recolour the jacket entirely? Both involve “colour”, but are technically very different. This article explains what you can do yourself and when a specialist is needed.

Refreshing colour on pigmented smooth leather (DIY possible)

Over time, pigmented smooth leather develops scratches and scuffs through use. On plain-coloured leather, you can easily correct such colour damage yourself with our Leather Fresh tints in a matching colour.

Before refreshing, clean the leather locally or, preferably, completely, as dirt beneath the tint leads to an uneven result. After applying Leather Fresh, care for the leather again with Colourlock Care & Waterproofing Oil. It protects the fresh tint from further abrasion.

Fading on open-pore smooth leather and suede leather (professional help required)

Aniline leather and suede leather are different: these types of leather usually fade across an area instead of showing isolated scratches. Although area-wide fading on aniline leather can also be refreshed with our Leather Fresh tints, this requires very precise work. The same applies to refreshing suede leather. We will be happy to advise you about the possibilities and look forward to hearing from you.

Note:
Do not expose such leather to direct light sources for long periods; instead store it in a wardrobe, which significantly delays fading.

Complete recolouring (possible professionally only)

Sometimes a coloured part of a motorcycle suit, an entire jacket or a pair of trousers is to be recoloured. This is sometimes possible, but it is always elaborate and labour-intensive.

Important:
Applying colour to smooth leather changes its feel somewhat — afterwards it will no longer feel exactly the same. Recoloured suede leather may also transfer colour slightly after recolouring. Such work requires experience and specialist knowledge.
