How to clean and care for Alcantara and Amaretta
Alcantara looks like suede leather, but it is a synthetic fabric and therefore requires different treatment. This article shows what is permitted and what permanently damages the surface.
What is Alcantara?
Alcantara and Amaretta are ultra-microfibre materials made of synthetic fibres. They look like suede leather and have a similar feel, but are not leather. In vehicles, they are frequently found on sports seats, headliners, door trim and steering wheels.
Important:
Leather products such as our Leather Care or Leather Shield are not suitable for Alcantara.
Everyday care
Vacuum Alcantara surfaces regularly and occasionally wipe them with a slightly damp cloth. This is sufficient for normal everyday care.
Removing stains and soiling
For normal soiling, use Colourlock Pol Star. Shake the bottle before use and always first check the cleaner for changes in a concealed area.
Dilute Pol Star with water at a ratio of 1:5 to 1:20, depending on the degree of soiling, and apply it evenly to the surface using a spray bottle, a microfibre glove or similar aid. Allow it to act briefly, then carefully work it in with a sponge or microfibre cloth in the direction of the main grain. Remove residues and foam that has formed with a damp cloth or a wet-dry vacuum cleaner (for professionals).
Greasy soiling can additionally be treated carefully with Leather Cleaning Spirit.
Note:
Always test first in a concealed area.
What you should not do
Rubbing too hard permanently changes the surface structure. Heat is also harmful. Avoid hair dryers, direct sunlight and seat heating at the highest setting while the surface is damp.
Pilling
Alcantara occasionally tends to develop surface matting, known as “pilling”. Small fibre balls form, making the surface appear dull. Matting that is not too severe can be removed with the Sanding Pad (see video below).
When the stain remains
For stains that cannot be removed, it is better to contact us early before more aggressive agents permanently damage the surface. Unlike genuine leather, Alcantara cannot be recoloured, so caution is the better approach.
Protection after cleaning
To reduce future soiling, treat the surface after cleaning with our waterproofing product, Allround Textile Sealant. It makes the surface more water-repellent and makes future cleaning easier.
