How to care for leather clothing

Not every leather jacket needs the same care product. The type of leather is decisive. This article explains what each type of leather needs and how the quick test for determining the leather type works.

Quick test: What kind of leather do I have?

Rub a drop of water into a concealed area. If it beads up, it is pigmented smooth leather. This is robust and easy to care for.
If it is absorbed, it is open-pore leather (aniline leather or suede leather), which is more sensitive and requires gentler products.

Pigmented smooth leather

Pigmented smooth leather is the most robust and easy-care type of leather. A protective colour layer on the surface makes it less sensitive to moisture and stains. Typical of casual jackets, motorcycle clothing and many women's leather trousers.

Minor colour damage and scuffs at impact points can be corrected with Colourlock Leather Fresh in a matching colour.

For care, treat the leather once or twice a year with Colourlock Care & Waterproofing Oil. The oil keeps the leather supple and breathable, and protects against premature ageing.

Aniline leather is smooth leather without a protective colour layer; a drop of water is absorbed and briefly darkens the leather. It is soft, natural and considered the most sensitive type of leather. Even with regular care, it remains more susceptible than pigmented leather and should therefore be used gently.

For stain protection, apply Aniline Cream regularly. Additionally, replenish older aniline leather with Aniline Protector and protect it against UV light. Care for it once or twice a year, depending on use.

Suede leather (velour, nubuck, game leather)

Suede leather includes all types of leather with a roughened, velvety surface: pig velour, goat velour, cow nubuck, lambskin jackets and traditional costume clothing made from deer, moose or calf velour. It is insulating and breathable, but sensitive to water, making it ideal for rain-free days.

Fading or stubborn stains that cannot be removed by washing can be professionally treated depending on the type of leather. Contact us for an initial assessment.

For stain protection, apply waterproofing regularly. Older suede leather, fur and hair-on coats become softer and more supple again with Aniline Protector. Faded colours become more vivid after cleaning, but not like new.
Always brush up after cleaning and care. Brush in one direction, not in circles. Care for it once or twice a year, depending on use.
