Cleaning and caring for motorcycle clothing

Motorcycle suits, gloves and boots become dirty quickly and need regular care. This article shows what to consider for smooth leather, membrane clothing and nubuck.

What is motorcycle leather?

Motorcycle leather is almost invariably well-waterproofed, surface-dyed smooth cowhide. Kangaroo leather is much rarer. Occasionally, motorcycle clothing is made from nubuck (suede leather), as well as combinations of leather and membrane material (Gore-Tex, Sympatex and similar).

Smooth leather: cleaning and care

Surface cleaning

Insect residue and other soiling can be removed very effectively with a 1:50 mixture of Colourlock Leather & Fur Wash Concentrate and water, and a soft brush, or alternatively with Colourlock Leather Cleaner strong (undiluted). This also makes light-coloured leather clean again. Gloves and boots can be cleaned in the same way.

For dried-on insect residue, it helps first to place a slightly damp cloth on the affected areas for around 10 minutes to soften the dirt. Then continue with cleaner and brush as described.

Complete cleaning in the washing machine

Suits and gloves can be washed by hand or in the washing machine without issue, following the washing instructions. The leather is guaranteed to remain soft. Protectors can be washed with them. Always pre-treat dried-on insect residue by hand with the brush.

Care after cleaning

For care, apply Colourlock Care & Waterproofing Oil sparingly in circular movements with a cloth or sponge. It cares for and waterproofs the leather while keeping the pores open, retaining breathability. This is especially important for motorcycle clothing.

Small colour damage and scuffs at impact points can be blended with Colourlock Leather Fresh in a matching colour.

Recolouring and repairs

Nubuck motorcycle clothing

Nubuck is occasionally used for motorcycle clothing, generally made from cowhide, lightly sanded on the grain side and with a soft nap. Nubuck leather is more sensitive than smooth leather, fades more easily and is more demanding to clean. It is better suited to fair-weather rides.

Local cleaning attempts carry a risk of rings. Better to clean carefully with the Colourlock Nubuck Eraser Block or our brush. If in doubt, carry out complete cleaning according to the washing instructions. Before machine washing, pre-treat dried stains by hand with a 1:5 to 1:10 mixture of wash concentrate and water, and the brush.

After drying, the leather fibres are somewhat stuck together: pull the item lengthways and crossways, rub it thoroughly and brush it up, or tumble it in a dryer on cold air for 15 to 30 minutes.

For care, apply Colourlock Aniline Protector; it replenishes the sensitive nubuck and protects against UV fading. Then use waterproofing for protection.
