Metallic leather and leather with a pearlescent effect
Refreshing metallic and pearlescent leather
Do you have a vehicle with shimmering or metallic leather? This article explains what makes these leathers special and what to expect when refreshing their colour.
What are metallic and pearlescent leathers?
Metallic and pearlescent effects on car leather are rare. They are most commonly found in Porsche vehicles, occasionally also in Volvo and BMW vehicles and on the leather in older American vehicles. The effect is created by applying a transparent, generally glossy clear coat with the corresponding metallic or pearlescent effect over the base colour. On BMW leather, this layer is typically matt rather than glossy.
In vehicles, pearlescent and silver effects are predominantly used. Gold, bronze and other effects are also used for clothing, shoes and bags.
Do metallic leathers also become unsightly over time?
Yes. Over time, metallic leather develops the same signs of wear as normal car leather: colour abrasion, scratches and drying cracks. Repair is more demanding, however, because the effect layer is more difficult to reproduce than on single-colour leather.
The result of a DIY (Do-it-Yourself) refresh is always a clear improvement, but not as even as on normal, single-colour leather. If you expect a perfect result, professional recolouring should be considered. We will be happy to provide you with a free quotation.
What is required?
The metallic effect is mixed into our Leather Fresh colours. Since metallic leather is rare, we do not have samples for all manufacturers. First check our colour chart and manufacturer list to see whether your leather is listed there.
If it is not, as is often the case, we need a sample: cut a thumbnail-sized, undamaged piece of leather from a concealed area (under the seat or behind a trim panel). Alternatively, you can send us a headrest, sun visor or cover, which you will of course receive back. Our address is below (please state the sender clearly):
Weidmann & Sohn
Lederzentrum Schweiz
Tämperlistrasse 3
8117 Fällanden
Please note that special colour mixes, whether based on the manufacturer’s colour or a submitted sample, take 7–9 working days from the order date before dispatch. An additional special colour fee of CHF 25.– is charged.

When is our workshop the better choice?
For badly damaged metallic leather or where the most uniform result possible is desired, we recommend professional recolouring. The result is not always identical to the original, but is even overall. We will be happy to advise you. Send us a photo for a free assessment.
