Cleaning and caring for belts and straps

Belts are rarely cared for, although it is worthwhile, especially for high-quality pieces. This article shows what is necessary and what to do with belts that transfer colour.

Cleaning

Belts are usually made of thick, robust bovine leather and are easy to care for. For soiling on pigmented smooth leather, use Colourlock Leather Cleaner mild. For stubborn soiling, support cleaning with a soft brush. For soiling that cannot be removed, please contact us.

Care

For care, we recommend our Elephant Leather Preserver. First rub the grease into a cloth, then care for the leather sparingly.

IMPORTANT: Never apply directly, especially to braided belts, as the grease would otherwise be absorbed unevenly and can collect in the gaps.

Belts that transfer colour

Some belts transfer colour onto trousers or shirts. This is a defect, and new belts should be complained about.

If a complaint is not possible, wipe the colour-transferring side of the belt several times while damp with Colourlock Leather Fixative. Then apply Colourlock Leather Shield several times to the smooth outer side and dry it with a hair dryer in between; this noticeably reduces the tendency to transfer colour.

Belts that transfer colour heavily usually cannot be fully saved this way. Here too, a complaint is the first and correct course of action. For colour transfer onto light-coloured leather, also read our guide.
