Cleaning and caring for animal hides such as cowhide and goatskin

Cowhide rugs, goatskins, sheepskin seat covers. Animal hides are robust, but cleaned somewhat differently from processed leather. Here you will learn what to consider.

Removing stains

Immediately blot fresh stains with a terry cloth or household cloth. Take care never to rub too hard. Treat residues with a lightly damp cloth. For difficult cleaning problems, first contact us; improper attempts at cleaning quickly make the mishap worse.

Stain protection

For stain protection, spray on our waterproofing for leather and textiles. It protects the hide from moisture and makes future cleaning easier. Renew every 6 to 12 months, depending on wear.

Care

Apply Aniline Protector sparingly to dry hides. It replenishes the leather and protects against UV fading.

Hides can also be lightly kneaded by hand. Proceed carefully with very old hides, as the leather can tear and the hair can break and come loose.

Storage

Hides last considerably longer if they are not exposed to direct sunlight and if the air is not too dry.

NOTE:
Never store them folded in plastic bags; hides should always be rolled. Also never store them in damp cellars.
