Why is garment leather harder to repair?

Tears in jackets are usually caused by catching on something, typically as so-called triangular tears that look like a “V”, or as torn-out side pockets. Genuine holes, for example from cigarette ash, occur less often.

Garment leather is considerably thinner than furniture or car leather. An invisible do-it-yourself repair with Fluid Leather is therefore generally not possible, as it only works on thicker black smooth leather and, even there, only in areas outside the main visible area. The location of the damage is also important, as the tension after a repair carries the risk of tearing again.

What is possible depending on the type of leather?

Plain-coloured smooth leather

On plain-coloured smooth leather, tears with legs around 3 to 5 centimetres long can generally be professionally repaired almost invisibly. They are closed with Fluid Leather, the grain is re-embossed, and the colour and gloss level are matched to the original. Such repairs are virtually unnoticeable and basically very stable – except in the knee or seat area, where stress is highest; afterwards, care must be taken to avoid sudden movements while wearing the garment.

For longer tears or larger holes, only replacement of the affected area or sewing work will help. We can match suitable leather in other colours through professional dyeing. Here, too, an almost invisible repair is possible. Sometimes we also place a seam along the tear and repeat it as a mirror image on the opposite side, making it look like an intentional decorative seam.

Multicoloured and exotic smooth leather

Multicoloured smooth leather, open-pore smooth leather (aniline leather) with special colour designs, pull-up leather (oiled leather) or metallic effects are more challenging. Each case must be individually assessed to determine which repair method is even suitable. Such repairs are inherently more elaborate.

Suede leather

Suede leather, goat velour, pigskin, traditional costume clothing or fur coats are widespread in clothing, but are the most difficult category when it comes to tears. Fluid Leather does not work here; often the tear can only be bonded from the inside. Replacement is often also impossible because identical leather is rarely available and suede leather cannot simply be redyed exactly. In some cases, a complete repair is therefore not achievable, and we will tell you this honestly before accepting an order.

What now?

Because these repairs require craftsmanship, we do not automatically offer them with our do-it-yourself solutions. Send us photos of the damage, and we will assess whether and how the tear can be repaired.
