Baggy and overstretched areas on leather clothing

Over time, loose, bulging areas can develop at points subject to stress: at the knees of leather trousers and around the elbows or seat of leather jackets. What causes this and what really helps.

Why do bulges develop?

In areas that are constantly stretched while being worn, typically the knees, elbows or seat, the leather fibres become overstretched over time. Eventually, the leather's natural restorative force is no longer enough to return the fibres to their original position. The leather remains bulged in that area and appears loose, even when the garment is not being worn.

Lined gloves (wool, fleece or leather) can generally also be washed at the same time without issue; the lining will not be damaged by the wash concentrate.

What helps – and what does not (permanently)

A full wash with Colourlock Leather & Fur Wash Concentrate, following the washing instructions, will usually make such bulges disappear. During washing, the leather swells slightly; during drying and kneading, it contracts again and the overstretched fibres are temporarily brought into a more even position.

IMPORTANT:
This improvement is not permanent. If the garment continues to be worn and is stressed again in the same area, bulges and stretch marks often return sooner than expected. The leather in that area is already structurally pre-stretched, and any further stress acts on the same weakened fibres.

Prevention

Tight-fitting garments should be treated gently, especially around the knees and seat. Frequent kneeling or sitting for long periods in tight leather trousers speeds up this effect. Regular care with Colorlock Care & Waterproofing Oil (smooth leather) or Colourlock Aniline Protector (suede leather, aniline leather) keeps the fibres more supple and elastic. This delays the effect, but does not prevent it entirely.

On heavily worn leather trousers and jackets, bulging areas are, to a certain extent, part of the natural patina. As with folds and creases, this is an ageing process that can be slowed down but not entirely prevented.
